The distance formula.
Knowing the formula, Distance (D) = Rate (R) * Time (T), is the first part of the

battle; the second step is knowing when to use it:

Terrance can lick 12 envelopes every 3 minutes.

How many envelopes can Terrance lick in one hour?

Finding Terrance's rate using the first part of the question allows you to figure out how many envelopes he can lick in one hour.
